The train network means you can be standing in a medieval village, a battlefield, or a vineyard ninety minutes after finishing breakfast in a capital city — no rental car, no tour bus, no 5 a.m. hotel pickup. The trick is knowing which trips are worth a day of your vacation and which ones only look good in photos.

Paris is where we started, and it’s still the day-trip capital of Europe — more world-class destinations within two hours of one city than anywhere else on the continent. These are the trips we run ourselves, in small groups, by train: the Normandy D-Day Tour, a Mont Saint-Michel visit, the castles of the Loire Valley, wine tasting in Burgundy, or — if you’d rather stay in the city — a Paris bike tour.

Twenty-plus years of putting people on trains taught us what makes a day trip work — and what makes one a wasted day. This site is that experience, written down, city by city. When a trip is worth it, we say so. When it isn’t, we say that too.
